When to see a dermatologist
A great deal of skin trouble is minor and self-limiting, and a good dermatologist will tell you so rather than manufacture a reason to return. But there are moments when the specialist is the right first call, not the last resort. A mole or spot that is changing — in size, colour, border, or the way it behaves — deserves a trained eye and a dermatoscope, not a wait-and-see. So does any skin condition that is affecting your sleep, your confidence, or your day, and anything a general practitioner has already treated once without success.
The other, quieter reason is prevention. In a sunny climate, a yearly full-skin examination is simply sensible maintenance — the dermatological equivalent of a dental check-up. It is the single most valuable half-hour in the specialty, and the one most people skip until something forces the appointment.
